Find the right question quickly – here are some of the most frequently asked questions about POIbase.
 | My anti-virus program tells me that the POIbase installation CD bundled with my POI PILOT 3000, POI PILOT 5000+ or POI FINDER 3.5 contains a trojan. |
Unfortunately, this is an incorrect error message from your anti-virus program. We have examined our data carefully and could not confirm the trojan warning. We are in contact with the manufacturers of the anti-virus programs in this regard and hope to find a solution soon. We apologise for this error.
For the POI and POI PILOT 3000 PILOT 5000 + you can also manually download and install the files on our Service and Support page under Updates. If you have a navigation device that was bundled with POI FINDER and you get the trojan warning, please contact us by e-mail at support@poicon.com with the corresponding error message.
This is probably a location where temporary speed checks are often carried out. We are currently working on an optimized solution, whereby temporary cameras are checked according to certain criteria, so that they remain permanently in the database.
| I received a warning at a location without a danger spot. Why is that? |
The database used by the POIbase software is based on user-generated content and premium editorial content from our partners. These are complementary in this case and give the user added value. We constantly update the POI data with our partners. Each update made by a user is immediately and automatically made available to all other users the next time they synchronise with the database. The more users add new and correct erroneous entries, the more accurate and up-to-date the database.
We were able to create the ability to add new locations directly to the database using the POIbase software, and thus to make it instantly available to all users, and of course yourself, following the next synchronisation.
| Is POIbase compatible with Medion devices? |
POIbase already supports many mobile navigation devices, and even some built-in systems. However POIbase is not currently compatible with Medion devices. However, we are working on making GoPal devices compatible with the POIbase software in the future.
| My device isn't recognised. What should I do? |
If your device is not automatically recognised by POIbase, you can try selecting the system manually. If your system is also not available for manual selection, this may be due to one of the following reasons:
1) Your system is compatible with POIbase, but isn't recognised
2) Your system is not compatible with POIbase
In the first case, you should consult the compatibility list. If your device is listed there, then there is a reason why your device is not being recognised. Typical causes include:
- the device isn't connected tot he PC properly (unstable ActiveSync connection, faulty cable, etc.)
- the device isn't in its original condition, but has been modified by the installation of third-party software (skins, add-ons, desktop exposes, etc.). These kinds of modifications make it very difficult for POIbase to detect your device. The best thing to do is to restore the system to its factory settings and to try the device recognition process again.
- the device has been changed slightly by an update (service release). Often just the smallest of changes are enough to cause the system not to be recognised. Please contact our Support Team, giving details of the version number of the installed firmware. It is also to point out updates that were obtained from the manufacturer.
- the device has been connected as a removable storage device instead of over ActiveSync, or vice-versa. In this case, please try changing the connection type if this is available in the device's settings.
- the device is only recognised on an inserted SD card. Some systems are only recognised by an SD card inserted into a card reader, and sometimes then need to be manually selected.
- the device has more than one installation of the navigation software. In this case it's very difficult for POIbase to recognise the system automatically and to install POIs correctly. The navigation software should not be installed on a device more than once (e.g. internal memory and SD card). Please uninstall all versions, and install just one version of the software in the standard installation directory.
In the second case, you should also consult the compatibility list. If your device is not included in the list - but similar devices are - then it is quite possible for us to make your device compatible. If you're up for a bit of experimentation, contact our Support section (using the Support button in POIbase) and provide us with all the details of your device. The most important things are the exact device name and model numbers of the hardware, the software version number, the directory structure, and the method used to connect it to the PC.
If you own a device that isn't on the compatibility list, and this is no similar device, then we ask you to have a bit of patience. It is our goal to make all mobile navigation systems compatible. If you have information about your device, how to add POIs, speed cameras and routes to it, we would be grateful of any tips and hints. Perhaps then we can add your device to the compatibility list.
| Why can I no longer edit 5 POIs a day? |
POIbase is an open system in which each user has the option (other than certain POI categories), to report new POIs, delete existing POIs, edit the description text of POIs, change the position of POIs, and change the category of POIs.
These changes are made immediately to the database and for all users. Improvements are, therefore, effectively and quickly delivered to all users. The disadvantage is that we must quickly review all changes for obvious errors, in order to guarantee the quality of the data. In order to help us fulfil this, we introduced limits. The following limits currently exist for normal users:
- Delete POIs: 5
- Add POIs: 5
- Move POIs: 5
- Edit POIs: 5
- Change POI category: 3
The limits are reset every day at midnight.
We are, of course, extremely grateful for all improvements made to our database. If you would like to become more active than the limits allow, please contact us using the Support section. The Support Team will then review your most recent changes using POIbase and increase your limits.
| Where can I report new or erroneous POIs? |
Most categories in POIbase are so-called user-generated content. That means that the POIs are added and edited by users. Our POI editorial team checks changes made by users, and so contributes to the improvement of the data quality. The best way to improve the data is by using the interactive map within the POIbase software.
The interactive map can be opened from the Edit menu. POIs can then be added, deleted, edits and moved here.
If the interactive map cannot be loaded, the current version of Java Runtime should be installed and POIbase restarted. The current version of Java Runtime is free and can be downloaded from www.java.com.
Not all POI categories can be edited, and there are also some individual POIs within the database which are read-only. If you wish to report errors in these data, please contact out Support Team (Support button within the POIbase software).
Speed camera directions cannot currently be reported by the user as an angle. Please, therefore, include this in the text description of the POI, and our POI editorial team will add the angle to the database.
